Beaver Fever
Avoiding Beaver Fever and other Diseases
from Handling Natural Fur Dubbing
Have you developed the habit of licking your fingers then spinning on your dubbing? If so, you are running the risk of contracting disease carried by natural fur dubbing.
You would not put your hands in the dirt and then in your mouth. So why would you do a similar action while tying flies. Here is a better solution.
Purchase a cheap package of small sponges. The kind that may come 4 to a package and are about 3/4 inch thick. Wet the sponge, partially wring it out and put on a salad plate.
Set the plate within easy reach on your tying desk or area. When you are ready to put on dubbing, wet your fingers on the sponge. Then touch the dubbing and spin on the tying thread.
This technique will work as well as wetting your fingers with saliva and you avoid the risk of contracting disease from natural fur dubbing.
