Great fishing in breathtaking surroundings can be had in the Rocky Mountains, but you'll need this book, because unlike many remote destinations with fly-in access, these waters can only be reached on horseback or on foot. Part One covers gear and techniques for traveling, camping, and fly fishing, including practical advice on how to plan a trip, which hiking, camping, and fishing tackle and flies to bring (and which to leave at home). Part Two is a detailed guide to select destinations in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Oregon, all based on the firsthand experience of the author.

Rich Osthoff is a professional fly tier and angling writer who has fished and hiked in the backcountry for 20-some years and written articles for the major fly-fishing magazines. This is his first book. He lives in Mauston, Wisconsin.

Reviews:
-- Rich Osthoff knows what he is talking about. I have read many books that attempt to cover backcountry fly fishing, and none have done so as well as Osthoff's. As an experienced backcountry fly fisherman, I found Osthoff is right on the money with all he had to say. There was still a lot of material to challenge even the experienced though. If you have any interest in catching gorgeous fish in an equally gorgeous setting, this is your book. Absolutely right on the money.

Presenting The Fly: A Practical Guide to the Most Important Element of Fly Fishing (Hardcover)

by Lefty Kreh; Rod Walinchus (Illustrator)
Look inside this book

Book Description:

A fly-fishing master teaches the intricate art of properly presenting a fly. Nothing is more important in fly fishing than successfully presenting the fly.

No matter what rod, reel, line, and fly are used, the fish will not take, if the fly is presented with a splash or out of target. In this comprehensive book, Lefty Kreh explains that the art of presentation is much more than dropping the fly in the best position--it also involves the clothes you wear, the methods you use to rig your tackle, how and where you approach the fish, the types of fly lines and reels you use, the direction of the light, the type of cover, and the retrieval method used, among other factors.

Lefty delves into each of these subjects with his usual knowledgeable vigor. Lefty also describes the different methods of presentation for the various species of fish-- from trout and other freshwater species to fish that inhabit backcountry and inshore waters to exciting saltwater species like permit and even sharks. With over one hundred photographs and line drawings, Presenting the Fly belongs on every angler's bookshelf.

-- As I looked through a friends copy of Lefty Kreh's PRESENTING THE FLY I said "gee, I don't need this book, I already know a lot of this stuff."

You see I've been fly fishing for almost 30 years and 30 years of frustration, trial and error and lost fish taught me much of what I found in this book.

I realized that all I need is another 30 years of frustration, trial and error and lost fish and I'll probably figure out the rest of it as well. Then I came to my senses and bought the book, you should too. If I only had one book on fly fishing this would be it. I wish I had it 30 years ago. I imagine a lot of fish are glad I didn't.

Great Book -- Dave Hughes does an excellent job describing and teaching how to read water. On most rivers, you will often see fly-fishermen fishing the wrong type of water or at least fishing certain types of water with the wrong technique.

Dave Hughes explains the basics water types (riffles, runs, pools, dead water, etc.) in detail. He also explains the different types of aquatic insects found in each type of water and why will be found in certain types of water over others (e.g. why certain nymphs are found primarily in the riffles and others more in pools.

He explains where fish will be in each type of water, what insect types will be in each type of water and what techniques work to catch the fish in each water type. It is an all-around very educational book for both the beginner and advanced fly fisher. The beginner can get a wealth of information from the book. A more experienced flyfisher will get many tips/techniques from this book and can use it as an all-around reference book to be read at least once a year. Don't pass up this book because the title seems simple. Everyone can learn a ton from this book.

Fifty Greatest Places to Fly Fish: Fly-Fishing Experts Share the World's Greatest Destinations (Hardcover)

by Chris Santella  Usually ships in 24 hours  224 pages

Book Description:

Amateur or expert, every angler dreams of landing "the big one," but that's only part of the appeal of fly fishing. Because even when hours pass without a bite, nothing beats the rugged beauty of the surroundings. For both armchair travelers and avid outdoorsmen who may have already started a checklist of their own, Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die maps out the meccas of the fly-fishing world.

Through in-depth interviews with the sport's acknowledged gurus, author Chris Santella goes beyond standard guides to convey the very essence of the recommended locations. Readers can vicariously cast mouse patterns to fifty-pound taimen in the wilds of Mongolia, wrangle with wily permit off the Florida Keys, and match the hatch on Montana's Armstrong's Spring Creek. Jardines de la Reina, Cuba (tarpon), the Zhupanova River, Kamchatka (rainbow trout), and the Rio Negro, Brazil (peacock bass) are also included.

The essays include a cultural and natural history of each site, along with colorful anecdotes based on the author's and authorities' experiences. With breathtakingly beautiful photos of the spots, many by celebrated fly-fishing photographer R. Valentine Atkinson, the book also provides adventurous anglers with enough travel-and-tackle information so that they, too, can start planning excursions to go fish around the globe.

-- A Must for the Rich Fishing Addict
If you have unlimited funds and time this book provides the backbone for a lifetime of fishing trips to exotic locales. Initially I bought the book as a gift for a fly-fishing addict but it was such a great read that I ended up buying a second book for myself.

The photography is outstanding and so far I've visited 2 of the places in the book and they both ranked as the top trips I've ever taken. 2 down and 48 more to go!!!

-- Stunning
I was drawn to this book by the beautiful photo on the cover. While I am not a flyfisher, I enjoy the outdoors and camping near rivers and lakes. I absolutely loved all the photos, and the exquisite descriptions of the surroundings.

I bought the book for my flyfisher son-in-law, but decided to buy another for myself to enjoy. The flyfisher in your life is certain to appreciate this timeless book.
