Clearwater Fly Rods - 905-4 mid and tip flex for a 5wt line are are good actions and sizes for fly fishing Colorado's medium to larger streams.

Not sure if you want to begin your fly fishing with a 9 foot 4 piece fly rod, try the Clearwater 8 foot 6 inch, 2-piece fly rod for 5-weight fly line. The best-selling line size and length fly rod for all-around trout action. This fly rod is built around the most popular rod actions we have ever built and has a smooth, crisp, mid-flex action.

This fly rod comes with the same 25-year guarantee as all our premium fly rods.

Editor Note:  Recently, I had the pleasure of fishing a Clearwater 8 foot 6 inch mid-flex 6.0 fly rod.  The gentleman I met on Bear Creek was most generous to allow me to try out his Clearwater rod.  Even with all my experience, I still mess up a back cast occasionally.  The Orvis easy mid-flex action was forgiving of my sloppy backcast and delivered the fly on target.  Within some half dozen casts, I hooked up with a nice 14 inch brown trout.  The Clearwater rod coupled with the Mid-Arbor Battenkill reel made bringing the trout to the net an easy task.  The mid-flex action allowed me to fell the fish and almost anticipate the trout's next run.

I have been fishing some of my really old rods a lot this summer.  Some are full flex and some a mid-flex or medium action.  The more I fish these slower action rods, the more I remember the joy of easy fly fishing.

I own a tip-flex rod and two mid flex or medium fast rods.  I fish nymphs almost exclusively.  For nymph fishing, I prefer the mid-flex action.  With the mid-flex action, I can feel the fish take the nymph easier. For big water or windy conditions, I switch over to my tip flex for more power.
