The 2006 Outdoor Industry Foundation study of the Outdoor Recreation Industry shows:
More than three out of every four Americans participate in active outdoor recreation each year. Americans spend money, create jobs, and support local communities when they get outdoors. Simple, healthy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, camping, or wildlife viewing generate enormous economic power and fuel a far-reaching ripple effect that touches many of the nation’s major economic sectors.
A $730 BILLION ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE U.S. ECONOMY
Many people don’t realize that having fun and staying healthy in the outdoors is essential to the continued growth of our economy and to the health of our citizens. In order to thrive, however, this burgeoning, often overlooked industry needs to be recognized, stimulated, and supported.
In this report, we explain how we determined the impact of the Active Outdoor Recreation Economy, how it interacts with the national economy, and how it affects all Americans. A technical report, published online at http://www.outdoorindustryfoundation.org/, provides more detailed numbers and information on our methodology and findings. That means in the Rocky Mountain Region, all outdoor recreation produces

The total economic impact on the U.S. economy from outdoor recreational fishing activities was about 61.5 billion dollars before any ripple effect. How does fishing compare to the golf industry?
"How many golfers are there in the U.S.?
There are 26.2 million golfers in the United States. A golfer is defined as anyone ages 18 and above who played at least one regulation round of golf in the past 12 months.
36.7 million Americans are golf participants, defined as anyone ages 5 and above who either played a round of golf or visited a golf practice facility."

The last year I could find revenue statistics for the U.S. Golf Industry was 2000. In 2000 the U.S. golf industry generated about $61.5 billion in revenue. This is approximately the same as the recreational fishing industry in 2006.
In 2006 compared to other economic sectors, the Outdoor Recreation Retail Sales was $289 billion dollars. Far ahead of pharmacuetical and drug manufacturing at $144 billion and only surpassed by telecommunications at $473 billion.
So let’s get outdoors and recreate. Help provide a job for someone while you stay healthy.
Tomorrow we will look at "What Nymph Fishing and Gourmet Cooking Have In Common."
