Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.

The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late.

Sign the tell Congress NO BUT NO Petition

The titles sound good but like Obama Care are riddled with traps and pitfalls. It is hard enough to make money on the internet without more regulations and junk to deal with.

If you surf or run an internet business, please pass this on to your friends. These two bills must be defeated.

Part of the fun of fly fishing is exploring the water in preparation for the coming season. These explorations help to shake off the winter’s cabin fever and start to focus on spring.

Wed. 3/31/10, I took a ride along Bear Creek to check out the conditions. The Creek was the color of coffee with a bit of cream in it and running at 54 CFS with an air temp of 54, a wind around 10 mph and high clouds. When I stopped at the Bear Creek Restaurant in Kitteridge for lunch, the sun was trying to peek through the cloud cover. After a leisurely lunch, I stepped outside to find the windchill had dropped the air temperature about 10 degrees cooler than when I arrived.

Next door to the restaurant (first building west) , a young man was working at the back of the empty building. Driving to that parking lot, I asked for permission to park there. This nice fellow was Tom Banaszek, owner of Knot New Wood. www.knotnewwood.com. Tom and his 5 employees use old wood to recycle into new furniture. The speciality is custom wine racks. But about any furniture item may be obtained. Tom is taking over the entire ground floor of this building to have a 2,000 foot work space and show room.

Take a look at the furniture Tom and his crew can make by recycling left over wood, slate and other materials. Really nice pieces. www.knotnewwood.com.

Tom gave me permission to park in the lot any time I want. All in all a successful day. Met a nice young man and received permission to use their lot for fishing on Bear Creek.

The Free Ride is Coming to and End! What does this mean? It means that the free ride on no sales taxes on internet purchases is coming to an end.

The Federal Moritorium on Internet Sales Taxes expired in 2003. With the current political party in power, the current political mindset and the ballooning national deficit, renewal of the the moritorium on internet sales taxes is highly unlikely. Further, I expect that there will eventually be a Federal Sales tax or a VAT tax levied on internet sales which will be collected to help pay off the Federal Budget Deficit. (Just like the European Union does now and we know how that is working out!)

In 2002, state governments organized to fight back. Under a state-led initiative known as the Streamlined Sales & Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA), 40 states and the District of Columbia banded together to simplify their sales tax codes in order to make sales tax collection easier. Under SSUTA, the collection of sales tax still remains voluntary. However, if ten states representing 20% of the U.S. population vote for the rules, the organization will pressure Washington D.C. for federal legislation. The SSUTA has gained traction recently http://smallbusiness.findlaw.com/business-operations/internet/internet-taxes(1).html by Bryan E. Kuhn Counselor at Law P.C.

This means states will be scrambling to pass or enforce sales tax or use tax laws on internet sales to balance budgets. It means online retailers will have to start collecting and remitting sales taxes to many more states than they do now.

Colorado recently passed HB1193 otherwise known as the "Amazon Ad Tax" among affiliate marketers to force Amazon to collect sales taxes on sales in Colorado if they have Colorado Affiliates. When other states such as New York and North Carolina have passed similar laws, the affiliate management companies have simply dumped the affiliates in those states effectively putting them out of business.

Almost all states have use tax or use fee laws on the books which require buyers of goods on which sales taxes have not been paid to remit the equivalent of sales taxes to the states. In the past these laws have mainly been applied to large ticket items such as boats and cars purchased in states with low or no sales taxes. These items have to be licensed and so the collection of the use tax could be controlled.

Other items such as appliances purchased out of state, downloadable software, ebooks, ecourses, membership sites are much harder to track. But in typical government fashion Colorado is working on a database of online retailers that market such items. As the data base grows, you can bet that online retailers will be forced to collect sales taxes.

The retailers that start gearing up now will be ahead of the curve. Those that don’t will be left scrambling to get sales tax licenses and systems in place to track and remit sales taxes. And you can bet that tracking consumers will be coming too. The laws may be changed to force disclosure of sales by state by buyer for an online retailer. Then the state will contact the buyer for the use tax.

The internet is one of the remaining engines keeping a bad economic situation from getting worse. And in typical Government fashion, government is going to screw it up for all of us.

This post is a personal opinion of the Editor and does not reflect the Company Policies of Fly Fishing Colroado.

Terry L. Johnson is a man who has paid his dues in the fly fishing industry. Working as a fly fishing and hunting guide for 20 plus years, Terry knows fly rods and gear from the working side out.

From the design and manufacturing side, Terry started as a custom bamboo and graphite rod designer and builder over 25 years ago. Working with rod building greats such as Joe Fisher, Press Powell, Graphite USA and others, Terry honed his rod design and building skills to a high level.

Finally Terry started producing T.L. Johnson Rods under his own name. T.L. Johnson rods are proudly made in Colorado, USA. TL Johnson fly rods utilize a unique unidirectional graphite fiber, Helix construction which allows for less propritary resin to be impregnated into the blank meaning less blank weight. The blank is constructed using a helix wrapping technique of the prepreg graphite on the mandrel for superior hoop strength and lighter blank construction. The result is lighter faster fly rods that cast straighter and farther with less effort.

How do I know how they cast.? I spent 4 hours casting T.L. Johnson fly rods at the International Sportsmens Exposition in January 2010 and another hour casting Terry’s rods at the Denver Fly Fishing Show 2010.

Last year I wrote three posts on invasive species and one on the use of felt vs aquastealth soles to control invasive species spread. New Zealand banned use of felt soles last year to control didymo spread.

All major fly fishing tackle manufacturers have agreed to stop using felt by 2011. In 2009 Simms came out with their soft rubber Vibram wading boot soles. Aquastealth soles have been around for awhile on Korkers boots and seem to work ok in most circumstances.

So what to do with those old comfortable wading shoes that are perfectly good except for the soles. Call up Rocky Mountain Resole at (719) 539-1455 or fill out their order form and send in your boots for a new set of aquastealth or Vibram wading soles. RMS will "last" your boots on special molds to keep the uppers in that comfortable shape while the resoling takes place. Cost is about $70 plus shipping. Turnaround time is 7 to 10 days.

Rocky Mountain Resole also resoles mountaineering and hiking boots and climbing shoes.

The Rocky Mountain Resole people spent some time explaining some of their process to me. And one of the members in my fly fishing club had boots resoled with the Vibram soles. He said they did a good job.
