Colorado Fly Fishing Conditions - Bear Creek - 8/6/08

August 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Water was warm and low at 17.5 CFS.  Almost to the point where I won’t fish the Creek.  Water clarity was excellent with bottom visible to 3 feet in most pools.  Fair amount of moss on bottom of pools and runs.  This is typical of Bear Creek in August and September.

Started in Lair of the Bear Park straight out from the main handicapped fishing dock.  There is a good pool there fed by a fast run and waterfall. The waterfall and run are overhung by a willow tree so casting is by careful river tension casts mostly. Caught a scrappy 10 inch rainbow at the foot of the run on a #16 purple flashback, goldribbed hares ear.  The purple flashbacks were purchased flies and have never worked for me except on Bear Creek.

Fished down thru Lair of the Bear Park to the East end without any more hookups. Scared up several small fish holding along the edges in very shallow water. Then took Bruin Bluff trail along the Creek toward Little Park in Idledale.  If you know where to look along the Bluff Trail, there are some delicious wild raspberries ripening now.

Fished some of the pools and runs along the Bluff Trail without any luck. Probably should have seined some insects and changed flies but too nice a day to mess with technical fly fishing stuff.

Back to the car for lunch and then drove to O’Fallon Park to fish my favorite pool.  Could see some nice rainbows lying on the bottom of the 2 foot deep section. This area is fed with tricky back currents and upwells.  On my second cast, a 14 or 15 inch bow rocketed off the bottom, inhaled my white yarn strike indicator.  Then rolled and headed for the bottom.  Not being sure if he really had the indicator or a fly, I did a hook set which pulled the indicator out of his mouth and back to the surface.  I saw this fish turn around and chase the indicator to the surface, inhale it again and head for the bottom.  Then he decided it was not eatable and spit it out.

Next I switched to a #16 Gray Greg’s Emerger on the top with a #18 gray RS2 on the bottom.  A dozen casts produced one 11 inch brown trout and one small brown that hit the bottom fly.  On to the head pool which was totally unproductive for me this time.

Next I drove to Little Park in Idledale.  Fished several two nymph rigs in one pool without any luck.  Switched to a #16 Adams dry with a #22 Griffith’s Gnat on the bottom.  Finally raised a 12 inch rainbow out of the tail of a fast run.  He hit the Adams pretty good but I set the hook too fast and missed him. Dry fly fishing is not my thing but I am trying to relearn how to do it. Again scared up 4 or 5 little fish hanging along the edges of shallow runs or little pools when I was wading along the edge of the stream to change position. These were approximately 6 inch sized fish in most cases.

Four o’clock and I was too tired to cast anymore.  Called it a day and headed for home.  But a so - so day fly fishing is better than the best day at work or pounding out a blog post.

Just a side note, it is important that you assemble your gear properly and also lay out all of the components on an open surface with good lighting. One more tip is bring along a nail clippers as well. To initially practice tying fly fishing knots, you will need some old fly line and a leader. Another thing to keep in mind is that new reels are designed for left-handed retrieval, so depending on which side you reel from, you may have to change the way that it is set up. Simple instructions for this can be found in the box that your reel comes in.
