Colorado Fly Fishing Conditions St Vrain River 4/7/10

April 12th, 2010 · Comments

Wednesday I woke up to find 4 inches of snow on my suv. I had an appointment in Longmont and did not look forward to the trip. But Longmont was clear, cool with bright blue skies.

After my appointment, I drove over to Lyons to check out the St Vrain River in town. Flows were about 40 CFS and the water was clear. I checked the river from the little park on the east edge of Lyons to the gauging station. Visibility was excellent to 2 feet deep. About the only place I could not see bottom was a couple of deeper holes at the base of some manmade waterfalls.

The bottom structure appeared to me to be caddis water and stones in the faster riffles but I didn’t have time to examine any structure. Wish I had brought my gear but another business appointment was scheduled.

Current flow as of 4/12/10 in Lyons is 67 CFS which should still be very fishable. But with a 12 CFS rise in one day, if you are going to fish, it should be in next day or two.
