Between Waterton and Chatfield Reservoir

As I say, "Some days you have the river and some days the river has you."  Today was one of the latter ones.  The day was supposed to be at 550 by 3 pm in the afternoon. But the highest it got on the river was about 480 around 2 P.M.   The water was a cold 38 - 400 Farenheit. and I saw only one 1/4" black stonefly and a small bwo adult around 2 pm.  Did not see a fish nor have a strike.  Seining produced one small caddis larvae around size 16 and one small grayish tan mayfly nymph about size 24 or 26.  River bottom seems to be silted in pretty bad with fine silt in every place I have examined between Waterton and Chatfield Reservoir.  Water Flow was a nice 117 CFS today.  I did photo 6 good sites for addition to the Real World Fly Fishing game.  I plan on adding at least 24 sites from the South Platte to the best virtual fly fishing simulator on the the market.  Download a demo of Real World Fly Fishing today.  Just click any RWFF link and select downloads, then the demo version.  Or purchase RWFF and my 110 Fly Fishing Tips PDF eBook together for less than the cost of a good fly line.

One cool thing the game has helped me with is my reach casting.  In the RWFF simulator, when you reach cast, you can see the position of the fly rod and fly line after the cast.  I tried some upstream reach casts to produce an upstream line mend and most of them ended up quite close to how they looked in Real World Fly Fishing.  Who says you can not learn something about fly fishing from playing a computer game.  But until you experience the simultor for yourself, you will not understand how real it is.

Somewhere on the upper section I fished today, I lost my net seine and so far have not found a satisfactory replacement.  Today the river had me.

On the South Platte north of the South Bridge and the river mouth at Chatfield.  One fly fisherman reported taking a 19" rainbow on an orange scud.  No one else I have talked to has seen any fish nor had any strikes. Fish are not moving up to spawn yet.  Be sure to read the fishing regulations for Chatfield Reservoir area in the 2008 Colorado Fishing and Property Directory available from anyplace that sells Colorado Fishing Licenses. Park entry fees are $6.00 per day unless you have an annual Colorado State Parks pass.
