Wednesday, the 13th turned out almost summer in winter. Air temperature by mid morning was 65 and stayed there until after mid afternoon. I tried out a new spot on the South Platte River here in the metro area. Water was coffee colored with visibility between 1 foot and 2 feet depending on your angle of vision into the water.
During some 3 to 4 hours of fishing, I spotted no fish rising. I started with a 2 nymph rig using an orange San Juan worm on top and a #14 gold bead head, flashback, gold ribbed hares ear on the bottom. After trying this rig for about an hour along some fast runs and deep pools at the end of the runs, I switched to using the the hares ear on top and a #16 Greg’s emerger on the bottom. After some 45 minutes of fishing close to a run near a bank, I had one good strike but failed to set the hook in time.
Switching to a #14 beadhead pheasant tail on top and the Greg’s emerger on the bottom, I worked upstream for another hour before calling it quits for the day. The wind had started to come up and temperature was dropping. But it had been a great day to be outdoors and get some exercise. Also to try out my new T.L. Johnson Fly Rod.
