During the AFFTA 2009 show, I tried 3 Mystic River Fly Rods. The M593-4, a 5wt 4pc was the second one I tried. This rod like the all the four piece rods had both stripper guides on the second section up from the butt section.
I started my casting at the NFFSP round practice targets from 20 feet and moved in 10 foot increments out to about 55 feet. The M593-4 had a different feel from the 2 wt M273-2 that I had tried which is to be expected. It also had a different casting feel than most other 5 wts I have tried or own. It took some ten minutes for me to adjust my stroke to the rod. It was not a matter of power in the rod blank because it had plenty of that. There was just a soft feel that developed during the middle of my casting stroke. This rod is listed as a medium fast and I found that soft feel a bit odd.
After getting my stroke adjusted to the rod, I started hitting the practice target accurately at 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet. At 55 feet, the Mystic M593-4 still had power in reserve and I could hit the practice target at will. I went for a couple of 60 foot casts which were on target and the rod felt like it had more power to spare. At 50 feet plus double hauls were easy because the stripper guides were a bit higher on the blank.
The best use is listed as large dry flies and streamers. This 5 wt is certainly capable of that. But it should also be able to handle 2 or 3 nymph rigs and dries up to size 18.
The M593-4 is manufactured with the same attention to detail that all the Mystic Rods exhibit. Two ceramic lined stripper guides, 7 hard chrome snake guides and a hard chrome tip top. The blanks are a high modulus graphite charcoal grey with black wrappings sporting a silver accent. The epoxy on the wrappings is again excellent with no sloppiness to the glue.
The reel seat is a highly polished aluminum cutout style with a light maple burl wood insert. The cork is top grade Portugese cork and very smooth in the hand. All rods from 2 through 5 wt use a half wells grip with a cutout. The reel seat is an uplocking style with double lock rings. The M593-4 comes in a black carbon tube with aluminum end caps and an engraved gray rod sock.
All Mystic rods are covered by a lifetime warranty, for the original owner. The warranty does not cover loss of gear, misuse, neglect or normal wear. There is a $50 handling charge if you need to use the warranty for a rod.
The Mystic M593-4 5 wt 9′ 3" fly rod retails at an MSRP of $399.00
