Real Antihunters and Fishers

November 3rd, 2007 · Comments

Ed Dentry of the Rocky Mountain News always has something meaty in his sports column.  On 11/1/07, he talked about who the real anti hunters were.  And it wasn’t PETA or the people who wanted to take your rifle away.  It was organizations like the Independent Petroleum Association of Mountain States, a drillers trade association.

Fly Fishing Colorado Editorial:
The anti fishers, hunters, hikers and wildlife watchers organizations are the fat cats in the gas and oil drilling organizations.  And their syncophants in Washington D.C.

Dentry Continues:
Next Thursday 11/8/07 the BLM will put public land in North Park and 130,000 acres in Jackson, Moffat and San Miguel Counties up for auction to the drilling industry.

After nearly 4 million acres of public hunting and fishing range in the west have been lost to the current drilling frenzy, many anglers and hunters are mad as hell and won’t take it anymore.

The speed with which sportmen, conservation groups and Granby residents reacted to the auction announcement, caused the BLM to remove the entire Grand County.  Plus 26,000 other acres in North Park, headwaters of the North Platte River from the auction.

Dentry says that the IPAMS has called Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, the American Fly Fishing Trade Association and the other members of  the Theodore Roosevelt Conversation Group as being "environmental obstructionist".

Fly Fishing Colorado Editorial Comment:
I am glad to see that the TRCG has managed to rattle the bureaucratic fossils at the BLM enough to force them to take more sensible action instead of totally pandering to the "big money".  Since Colorado has a year round fishing season, I would put up the amount of money fishing, brings to our state from tourism, trips, equipment sales -rentals and licenses against the entire drilling industry and the paltry few jobs it brings into Colorado.  This is not counting the money from hunting and wildlife viewing.

Wouldn’t it be great if the drilling industry started learning how to become "environmentally friendly" instead of name calling.  By name calling, the drilling industry is putting out signals, they are afraid their day of being the big dog is over.  They are afraid of what a band of small dogs can do to one large one.  Instead of name calling, the drilling industry both oil and gas should be learning how to drill "environmentally friendly" so they do not dot the landscape with their cancer sores. The days of sitting idly by and letting these cancers destroy our pristine western landscape are coming to an end.
