Rite Bobbins – Make Fly Tying Easy

RiteTM Bobbins Short History

The RiteTM Bobbin was designed and developed by Mr. Bill Merg, a German born and educated Manufacturing Engineer and master fly tier, in 1991. Bill spent several years perfecting the design. Then he and his wife Eva started Merco Products in Sunnyvale, California, in 1993.  The RiteTM Bobbin enjoyed rapid world wide success and is sold in 30 countries today. In 2006, the Mergs retired and sold the business to Lyle Graff the current owner. Lyle, with the Mergs assistance, moved the business to Nye, Montana where it resides today on the banks of the beautiful Stillwater River in southern Montana.

RiteTM Bobbins are used the world over by amateur and professional fly tiers because it is the only fly tying bobbin to offer adjustable thread tension control. Ordinary spring arm bobbins do not have this thread tension control ability. With a spring arm bobbin, the tier has to apply thread control by squeezing the bobbin arms or bending the arms. Neither method works very well.

With the RiteTM Bobbin, simply turn the star wheel to adjust the thread tension. These high quality bobbins are made with a single brass arm, brass thread adjustment wheel, high impact plastic spool holders and high quality ceramic thread tube. In fact the ceramic thread tubes are so high quality, competing bobbin manufacturers purchase the tubes from Merco for use in their own brands of tying bobbins.

RiteTM Bobbins come in four models: from the Shorty, Standard, Mag to the Cermag Bobbin.

Shorty Rite Bobbin
The Shorty will handle thread from 4/0 to 17/0 with a thread tension adjustment of 1 to 9 ounces. Works well for larger size flies too.

(Editor Note: This is my favorite fly tying bobbin and perfect for tying flies from size 10 through 24. I am in process of replacing all my standard spring arm bobbins to Shorty RiteTM Bobbins.)

Standard Rite Bobbin
The Standard has a 1" longer brass arm than the Shorty and has a thread tension adjustment of 1 to 9 ounces.

This bobbin is a versatile bobbin for tying flies from size 2 to size 22.

Rite Bobbin Standard - 1 inch longer tube than the Shorty. Versatile bobbin for sizes 2 through 22

Mag Rite Bobbin
The Mag bobbin is perfect for salt water flies. It has a 3" stainless steel thread tube. The large diameter tube allows for large thread up to yarn size. This particular bobbin has become popular for rod winding using Gudebrod or Dynacord rod thread. It has a heavy duty click drag system with 2 – 16 ounces of thread tension.

Cermag Rite Bobbin
The Cermag with a 2 1/2" ceramic insert has a longer reach. Manufactured from surgical quality stainless steel components, the Cermag is perfect for streamers and spinning deer hair. The heavy duty thread tension of 2 – 16 ounces allows for heavy thread pressure to anchor bulky materials on the hook.
