Sage Flight Outfit Review

Sage Flight Outfits

Sage Flight Outfits are excellent for beginners or advanced intermediates. The outfit tested included a 9′ 5wt 4pc fly rod, a Sage 1850 fly reel with Rio Fly line and a hard case with clamshell reel case. This type case is excellent as it allows the reel to stay attached to the rod saving setup time. The case has an attached carry strap for convience.

The Sage Flight Series rods are built using refinements to the G5 technology used for manufacturing other Sage fly rods. The Flight Rod I tested was light in the hand and responsive. The rod blank is a beautiful bronze color with brown wrappings. There are 9 two foot snake guides, tip top plus one stripping guide that is lined to reduce line wear. (I still use the old rule of thumb that a high quality rod should have at least one more guide than the number of feet but not counting the bottom stripping guide.) The epoxy coatings over the guide wraps are some of the smoothest and neatest I have ever seen.

The handle on the rod for sale is a half wells with cutout. The cork has no discernable fills, nicks or pits. The sanding is excellent producing an exceptionally smooth grip that is a pleasure to hold in the hand.

Casting Characteristics:

The Flight I tested is a medium fast action with lots of reserve power and accuracy. Pick up and laydown casts at 40 feet were right on target. I was also able to do 55 foot pickup and lay down casts on target. Double hauls were going to 65 to 70 feet most of the time. When they did not, it was operator error and not the rod.

The 1850 fly reel that comes with the outfit is an attractive non-glare titanium grey color. Retrieve is buttery smooth with a soft click sound. One thing I really like is the drag knob design. Easy to get hold of but does not stick out to catch an errant leader. The drag is the same sealed floating tripod design used in the 2000 series reels. The startup is smooth and even. The drag is smooth and infinitely adjustable. Reel features a machined tough, ergonomic handle and comes with a padded reel case. An added bonus are the 1800 series spools are interchangeable with the 2000 and 1600 series reels.

Rod case is a rigid tube with a clamshell to allow the reel to stay attached to the rod. There is a side zip pocket on the side of the clamshell that holds the padded reel case for storing the reel off the rod and for storage of extra leaders.
