Technical Fly Fishing

What kind of water do you need for technical fly fishing? Some would say Spring Creeks, some would say gin clear small water or some might say fishing for elusive golden trout.

On my favorite little water two weeks ago and last week, I had the following technical fly fishing situation.

bear creek colorado bar pool
Bear Creek Bar Pool

Rock 2 is actually 2 rocks close together.  At 30 or more CFS, the water from the feeder stream and the main flow hits the two rocks and rolls around them to flow mostly straight down stream. In most cases the trout will be facing straight upstream. (Facing the green arrow heads)  This is the typical trout stream situation.

But for the last two weeks, the flows have been around 20 CFS.  At that low a flow, the water rolls around the set of #2 rocks and up between the back rock and the smaller rock before moving into the main flow.  When this happens, there is a faster main flow from above the stream bottom to about 15 inches up the water column.  Then over the top of this is a slower flow that fans out between lines 6 and 7 and along the downstream side of line 7. This slow flow creates an opportunistic feeding lane for the trout.

After watching the pool for some 10 minutes, I could see most of the trout about 6 inches down in the water column facing along both sides of line 7.  Every once in a while, a trout would dart forward and nose into the rocks to grab a tasty morsel.

The technical fishing issue is this.  How do you get a downstream drift with the flow between rock 2 and the next downstream rock such that it only sinks 6 or 8 inches and floats out with the slower flow on top of the fast under current? The faster under flow would grab my nymph rig and rip it downstream.

I am open to suggestions. I tried about a half dozen solutions without success.

You have me thinking, not sure if this will make sense but keep the good ignore the rest! Sink rate and Distance. How to find the zone cut the distance or change the sink. 1st can you change sides of river/angle of cast if possible to change distance.Or add additional indicator fly’s 2 even3 to slow the sink. Some combination will work , but you will only get a few cast with that busy of a rig sometimes. Heck give it a try.
Thanks for site I just found it and enjoy it.
