Fly Fishing and Skiing in Colorado
Gold Medal Winter Fly Fishing and Skiing in Colorado
Combine your Colorado ski trip with some winter fly fishing in Colorado. If you are a die-hard fisherman and an avid skier, you can enjoy both skiing and fly fishing Colorado during the winter. Some rivers near ski resorts remain open water and offer excellent winter fly fishing. With a year round fishing season, enjoy fly fishing one day and skiing the next.
The Blue River is one such gold medal fishery. The upper Blue flows through Breckenridge down over the "steppes" area to Dillion Reservoir. This section is for fly fishing and open to flies and lures only. Catch and Release regulations apply here. Below Dillion Reservoir, the Blue flows to Green Mountain Reservoir at Kremmling 38 miles away. Then from the Green Mountain Reservoir, the Blue flows into the Colorado River.
Even during winter months, the Blue River below Dillion Dam remains open water for a mile or so and can be fished with flies and lures only. Some truly awesome rainbows inhabit this stretch of the river during winter months. Wear appropriate clothing under your waders such as "Underoos" polypropylene long johns or similar underwear. Wear good warm wool or polypropylene socks. Avoid any cotton socks as they will not breath and your feet will get very cold from moisture buildup inside the wader booties. The water temp’s will range from 36 to 42 degrees on many days.
Closer to the dam try a mysis shrimp pattern as a dropper, Or use it as a point fly with a midge emerger as the dropper. In December and January, midges are always a good patterns for fly fishing Colorado.
You may also find open water on the Upper Blue between Dillion Reservoir and Breckenridge. If so try fishing small midge emergers or a small Griffith gnat or Adams dry fly in sizes 20 - 22 with a 22 or 24 midge emerger as a dropper.
Breckenridge is one of the most beautiful places in Colorado, winter or summer.
